What a weekend! I am exhausted and will spend the entire day napping. It was a little breezy, but overall an amazing time was had. Live music is a passion of mine, so festivals can be hit or miss for me depending on the crowd. I’m not there to socialize and get drunk. It’s a quick way to see a million bands and I’m not interested in your conversations…and please stop touching me. Shaky Knees was a great success this year though.
We started the weekend with Bloc Party and moved on quickly to The Kills. Alison Mosshart is an absolute animal. She’s primal and stalks around the stage like a lithe cat. I had always wanted to see them and they didn’t disappoint in the least. They’re coming back in September two days before my birthday, so I will definitely be there. I would love even more time with them to get into some deeper tracks. The night was finished with a bit of Jane’s Addiction. Not my favourite band but they’re someone that you’d like to say you’ve seen.
Second day was a bit of a wash. We got a really late start to the day and had a camera battery crisis. Surely you’ve noticed the photo quality isn’t my usual clarity. I couldn’t charge any of my batteries for my basic Nikon camera, so it was all up to the camera phone. Saturday I saw a bit of Huey Lewis, all of The Decemberists, and a tiny bit of My Morning Jacket. I was more interested in getting Japanese food afterwards. Priorities.
Sunday! That’s when it all happened. Eagles of Death Metal is one of my top ten favourite bands of all time. I love anything that Josh Homme touches and Jesse Hughes is a babe. For some weird reason the crowd was relatively small in the VIP section which meant I was right up front. I got a guitar pick from Jesse’s cousin and lost my mind. Amazing show. I can’t say enough good things about that band and their new album, Zipper Down. Go buy it. They make fun of the Silverlake hipsters and it makes me laugh for days.
The Black Angels were wonderful as usual. I’ve seen them too many times to count and this time I was right next to some of their parents. Ha. The big finale for the whole weekend was Florence and the Machine. She was in this sheer yellow dress that made her look like some sort of ethereal flower. Her performance was flawless. The crowd was a bit different. Too drunk, too loud, too smelly, too everything. I nearly threw up a couple times but powered through for Florence. She needed another fairy there.
All in all, great weekend. Now for some much needed sleep.
